A song by an unlikely pairing- When Lou Reed and Metallica collaborated to make the Lulu album, many people thought that was a very unusual pairing. Purists in both camps were somewhat unhappy with the results. Many (including me) liked the album. Both Lou Reed and Metallica liked the results, If it was not for Lou’s untimely death, there may have been a follow-up lp. But to those who thought that Lou & Metallica was Lou’s most unlikely collaboration, might have forgotten about this very rare moment at a 2002 charity concert- Lou Reed and Luciano Pavarotti singing Lou’s song Perfect Day…

A fave song from 1990- For me, a favorite 1990 lp was Songs for Drella by Lou Reed and John Cale. It was great to see & hear the two driving forces of The Velvet Underground reunited. Sadly, the event that got them briefly back together was the death of their friend and sometime-mentor Andy Warhol. Drella was a nickname for Andy, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella. (Andy himself did not like that nickname). But it reflects the sometimes conflicted relationship he had with those around him. It is a personal, introspective and moving album, this song, Nobody but You, is the single from that album…

A song by an artist/band from Louisiana – The Residents claim to originally be from Shreveport Louisiana, they then moved to California… As with most things about The Residents, it is hard to tell if that is 100% true, but they have consistently claimed it since the beginning. Their first album came out in 1974 and they have released over 60 albums since then, and are still as creative and innovative as ever.. As they say “the world’s most famous unknown band celebrating 45+ years of obscurity” Here’s their version of Jailhouse Rock…

A Boogie- Kitchen Sink Boogie by Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers… the late great Hound Dog Taylor recorded live on this track, he belts out a Boogie song that will get your toes tapping. Hound Dog Taylor on guitar and vocals accompanied by a drummer and bassist… Incredible Rockin’ tune… It is said that a club appearance by Hound Dog in Boston inspired a young George Thorogood…

A song that is over eight minutes and is not a live Jam – The Return of the Giant Hogweed by Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), clocking in at just over 8 minutes, this song by Peter Gabriel era Genesis is very artistic, theatrical, progressive, & creative. Turning a chapter of British botanical history into a stunning sci-fi epic song is quite a feat. Peter Gabriel era Genesis made numerous phenomenal lps… if you only know the latter (& more popular) Phil Collins era Genesis, dig deeper & check out lps like Nursery Crymes, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, etc. You won’t be disappointed.
