A song by a Girl Group- The Shangri-Las had the quintessential girl group sound, they had many huge hits including Leader of the Pack, Remember Walking in the Sand, Give him a Great Big Kiss and many more including my pick here- Out in the Streets… This song was also a favorite of Debbie Harry and one of the first Blondie demos that they recorded… The Shangri-Las producer, Shadow Morton, also produced the second New York Dolls lp…

A recording by someone that has been incarcerated-
C’mon Everybody by Sid Vicious… Sid Vicious was accused of the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, he was arrested and jailed… Eventually out on bail (pending trial), he overdosed and died. He was 21 years old. There are numerous alternate theories as to how Nancy died, it is likely that if he went to trial there would have been enough Reasonable Doubt for him to have been acquitted… Noted defense attorney F. Lee Bailey was to be his lawyer (arranged by Malcolm McLaren and the record company). Besides his work with the Sex Pistols, and live shows, Sid only recorded three solo studio songs: C’Mon Everybody, Something Else, and My Way (the first two are Eddie Cochran cover songs and the third is a cover of the classic by Frank Sinatra/Paul Anka)…

A song that mentions religion- Mr. Raffles by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel… “…Man it was mean, to be seen in the robes you wore for Lent, you must have known that it was Easter…” Dripping with sarcasm and religious imagery, this song is about the hypocrisy of some holier-than-thou religious leaders…

A favorite song from 1977 – ’77 “the year Punk broke” one of the BEST years for new music… Oh my God, So many great singles and lps were released that year, Ramones, Blondie, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Talking Heads, Sex Pistols, Adverts, Richard Hell, Damned, Patti Smith, Pere Ubu, Johnny Thunders & Heartbreakers, Saints, Wire, Stranglers, 999, Suicide, Rezillos, Wreckless Eric, Television, Slaughter & the Dogs, Iggy Pop, The Only Ones, and so many more…but my absolute favorite was The Dead Boys’ lp Young Loud and Snotty… Sonic Reducer is my favorite song from that album (but I’ve used it for another category already), so I will pick Down in Flames, another GREAT song from that album…

A song with sing or song in the title – Black Angel’s Death Song by The Velvet Underground… from their 1967 debut album (cover art by Andy Warhol). The Velvet Underground: Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker were so far ahead of the times, most people still have not caught up! Simply Brilliant!
